In October 2019, the SfN team participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s run by the Alzheimer’s Association for the first time. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. The SfN team volunteered at the event by coming early, setting up stations and booths, and establishing checkpoints throughout the route of the walk in the city of San Jose.
In the 2019-2020 year, SfN shifted its focus to community service as well as education about neuroscience. We felt that the Walk to End Alzheimer’s was an extremely great and powerful cause to participate in. Alzheimer’s Disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, with no cure and minimally effective treatments. Especially as the population of the US gentrifies, with a steady uptick in the number of the elderly, it is increasingly important to support awareness, funding, and research to put an end to Alzheimer’s disease.
Participating in the Alzheimer’s walk was an extremely powerful experience for the SfN team. It was great to give back to the community through volunteering at the walk, meet new individuals and families with personal experiences with Alzheimer’s, and come together with the community over one cause. I would highly recommend participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s as it is an extremely important cause to support.
Unfortunately, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is much more delocalized in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic. However, the pictures below are from the 2019 San Jose Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
