One of my favorite SfN events is the first one of each school year, the Sheep Brain Dissection event. When I first heard of SfN, this event was the one attended and from that first event, I knew SfN was an organization I had to be a part of.
During the Brain Dissection event, the SfN team obtains actual sheep brains for the attendees to dissect as well as scalpels, trays, gloves, and other equipment. The team organizes a presentation and walks the attendees through several dissections to observe each section of the brain. Several team members also walk around the room and assist the attendees with their work and explain the function and intricacies of each part of the brain.
I love not only taking part in the dissection but also teaching others about the brain as an SfN member. The event is such a great hands-on way to learn immensely about the brain not by reading about the brain in a book, but by firsthand observing and studying each part of the brain. Also, for me, itโs a thrilling feeling to be holding a brain in your hand and an extremely unique experience that SfN brings to life through their event. Unfortunately, the SfN team was not able to host our yearly brain dissection in 2020 due to COVID-19; however, the pictures below are from the 2019 event.
